Hors de soi. Danser brut' pose un regard inédit et transversal sur la danse à partir de l'art brut, mais aussi de l'art contemporain, du cinéma ou encore de la musique. En réunissant plus de 400 ouvres du 19e siècle à nos jours, l'exposition part à la conquête d'un invisible fait de gestes ordinaires et extraordinaires ayant traversé la modernité. S'ils ont parfois été repérés, annotés, filmés, ils n'ont pour autant pas été perçus comme différentes phases d'un même phénomène. À travers un mélange d'art brut, d'art marginal, d'art moderne, d'art contemporain, de documents d'archives médicales, de fragments de films, etc., cette exposition thématique offre un éclairage inédit sur l'histoire de l'art moderne. Y seront convoquées les danses rituelles, rondes et épidémies de danse, ainsi que les premières études sur l'hystérie dans les années 1870 et leur influence, entre autres, sur l'art fin-de-siècle et le cinéma muet : de Toulouse Lautrec à Charlie Chaplin, en passant par les dessins rarement exposés du légendaire danseur Vaslav Nijinsky, aux performances artistiques radicales et aux événements des années 1970. D'autres artistes seront présents, tels que Adolf Wölfli, Aloise Corbaz, Bruce Nauman, Michael Borremans, Arnulf Rainer, Mary Wigman, Valeska Gert, Rebecca Horn, Michel Francois, etc. Exhibition: BOZAR, Brussels, Belgium (20.05.-21.07.2020).

"How artists created an aesthetic of "positive barbarism" in a world devastated by World War II, the Holocaust, and the atomic bomb"-- In Brutal Aesthetics, leading art historian Hal Foster explores how postwar artists and writers searched for a new foundation of culture after the massive devastation of World War II, the Holocaust, and the atomic bomb. Inspired by the notion that modernist art can teach us how to survive a civilization become barbaric, Foster examines the various ways that key figures from the early 1940s to the early 1960s sought to develop a “brutal aesthetics” adequate to the destruction around them.With a focus on the philosopher Georges Bataille, the painters Jean Dubuffet and Asger Jorn, and the sculptors Eduardo Paolozzi and Claes Oldenburg, Foster investigates a manifold move to strip art down, or to reveal it as already bare, in order to begin again. Het belang van Jan Van Eyck voor de kunst in de 15de eeuw en daarna kan niet overschat worden. Met zijn oog voor detail en technische onderlegdheid zet hij een standaard die nooit geëvenaard zal worden. Dankzij dat uitzonderlijke talent komt de meester algauw in de gunst van vorsten en mecenassen. Over het levenspad van Jan Van Eyck is niet veel bekend, maar dat hij veel onderweg is, staat buiten kijf. De schilder woont en werkt in het bruisende Brugge. Hij verblijft ook in Den Haag, Rijsel, Doornik en Gent. In opdracht van de Bourgondische hertog Filips de Goede reist hij mogelijk naar het Heilig Land en gaat hij in Portugal de toekomstige echtgenote van Filips portretteren. De twintig schilderijen die Jan Van Eyck nalaat, zijn evenveel puzzelstukken waarmee 'De Grote Van Eyck Atlas' dat nomadische bestaan van de Vlaamse meester wil reconstrueren. In het spoor van Jan Van Eyck voeren verrassende wandelroutes je zo naar zijn 15de-eeuwse wereld. 'De Grote Van Eyck Atlas' is rijkelijk geïllustreerd met foto's en kunstreproducties.
